THE BLACK MAGICIAN ("Der Schwarze Magier") (1924) is a strange occult terror novel from Germany's Paul Madsack, concerning The Master, a popular sculptor (and "influencer" of his day), who uses his powers of dark sorcery to expand his influence (and profit), even as he attempts to bring the unsuspecting, small-town painter Fiedler under his sway. A far-ranging novel, this includes glimpses of the political and cultural realities of Germany at the time, as background for a supernatural stew of weird scenarios and visionary excess. Includes an Afterword by the Translator, Shawn Garrett, this work is making its first appearance in English.

THE SPHINX ("Esfinge") published in 1908 by Brazil's Coelho Neto, and here translated into English for the first time by Shawn Garrett, is a strange mixture of Symbolist and Occult Novel, concerning a boarding house in Rio de Janeiro whose characters are attracted to, annoyed with or intrigued by their mysterious fellow boarder, Englishman James Marian, who possesses a virile masculine body but the beautiful features of a woman. Our narrator agrees to translate a strange text for Marian, one which reveals his complicated and metaphysical origins, even as tragedy strikes the small compliment of friends and associates. An intriguing, if abstracted, meditation on gender and love, this novel deserves a larger audience. Includes an Afterword by the Translator.

Froylán Turcios' "El Vampiro" (1910) — here translated into English by Shawn Garrett for the first time as THE VAMPIRE — is one of this Honduran writer's oddest works, a Romantic/Gothic novel with overtones of Decadence (Italian Decadent Gabriele D'Annunzio was a large influence on Turcios). The idyllic life of young Rogerio Mendoza and his beautiful cousin Luz are disrupted not just by a predatory priest, but by a legacy of violence and mysterious death in his family line, even as their home contains a locked room that must never be opened. Those seeking a Honduran version of DRACULA should seek elsewhere, but this intoxicating and beautiful tragedy casts a strange spell all its own. Includes an Afterword by the Translator.

The House Of Spirits (1925) by Alberto Savinio (Strange Arts #1)
THE HOUSE OF SPIRITS ("La Casa Ispirata") published in 1925 by Italy’s Alberto Savinio, and here translated into English for the first time by Shawn Garrett, is a strange, metaphysical/psychological novel, centered on the “character” of Savinio who rents a room in a typical bourgeois home in 1910 Paris, and his observations of the varied characters and “types” who live there. We observe along with him the dysfunctional relationships of the family and friends, while also experiencing his “metaphysically informed” view of the city and its “spirits” – before a wrenching historical event upends everything. A strange, proto-surrealistic take on Parisian life before Europe changed forever, while perhaps presenting some commentary on the strands of history and psychology that led there, THE HOUSE OF SPIRITS is a challenging and intriguing work. Includes an Afterword by the Translator. |

Very Strange Fairy Tales (1916) by Kornel Makuszynski (Strange Stories #3)
VERY STRANGE FAIRY TALES (“Bardzo Dziwne Bajki”) (1916) was Makuszynski’s first book of Polish fairy tales — he had previously published ARABIAN ADVENTURES (“Awantury Arabskie”) in 1913, which drew heavily on the legends and fairy tales of the Middle East. While in many ways these are standard European Fairy Tales, teaching concepts like Empathy, Resourcefulness, Kindness and Bravery, they are also written with a particular sparkle and inventiveness that makes them noteworthy and secures their classic status. “Brave Janek,” in particular, is a delightful extended adventure narrative of monsters and witches, told from the point-of-view of the titular character’s faithful dog. The edition also includes an Afterword from the Translator. CONTENTS: Princess Marysia, The Black Swan And The Ice Mountain / Kopytko The Shoemaker and Kwak The Duck / How The Tailor, Mr. Thread, Became King / Brave Janek And His Dog (novella) |
